Managing the enviroment

Managing the enviroment is the topic we have been learning for the past 4 or 5 weeks. In this video I recorded myself covering the following topic/concepts: Resources, Enviroment and Sustainabillity. I also included my resource research report for to listen to.

Papatuanuku animation

For the past week I have been working on my papatuanuku animation that is made to represent my Papatuanuku poem but  since my poem is 3 paragraphs long I only made the animaton on the first paragraph.

Genetic disease

For the past three weeks I have been working on a genetic disease to present in front of my class and the disease I spoke about was Adrenoleukkodystrophy of ALD for short. The disease I spoke is special in some way to me because and couple of my cousins come from a long line of people with this disease and just like their cousins they got it as well but luckily for them they have lived past the life expectancy. The hardest part was collecting information and adding it to a slide but the easiest part for me was when I presented in front of the class, even though I was nervous I feel like I did a good job after all.

Papatuanuku

Today I made a start on my Social Studies works and the topic for this term is Mananging the Enviroment. The first project I did was about Papatuanuku (Mother Earth) which was really easy to the point where I had to compose a poem about Papatuanuku but I did get it done and I think it was pretty good. The easiest part about this project was when I was answering all the question which was, Why is Papatuānuku important? What is her purpose? How can we take care of her? What are you going to do to show your appreciation towards Papatuānuku? I know I answered them resonable and responsible because I put my whole brain into thinkg about ways we can help Papatuanuku and what she really is about. The hardest part about this project was composing a poem straight from the heart because I'm not the rhyming type of person but I pulled myself together and composed a poem I am pretty proud of and here it is.

PAPATUANUKU

Our Solar system provides 8 planets

Out of 8 planets theres 1

That 1 planet is earth

On earth lays Papatuanuku

On Papatuanuku lays plants

Within those plants lay fruits and vegetables

Those fruits and veggies get picked

From being picked us humans eat them

And the cycle goes around again

On earth lays Papatuanuku

On Papatuanuku lay trees

Those trees grow big

Once fully grown they get chopped down

Once chopped they are made to be purchased

Once purchased they are turned into houses

And those houses are used for us to live in

And the cycle begins again

On earth lays Papatuanuku

On Papatuanuku lay humans

Us humans destroy her

while some try to heal her

We live we die

We run we walk

We do everything besides care

We don’t care about what's being thrown away

We don’t care about what’s being destroyed

Because all we do is “destroy”

Earth is now plummeting into destruction

And all we have to do is let the cycle continue

Something I would deffinitly do different next time is to believe in myself because it took some real time to compose that poem to the point where I almost went to the internet to copy one. One promise I will make is to change the way I treat our earth and thats final.

Send it challenge

Today in Science we made a catapulte to launch a pingpong ball to see who would win the challenge. Doing this activity tested my creativity skills so much I almost gave up but me and my team pushed through the hard part and got it done even though we probably got the least furtherest out of all the other teams. The hard part was creating the catapult because we had a few trials and errors and it was hard to make a catapult with the materials that was given to us which was ice block sticks, rubber bands, a cup, a spoon and paper clips. The easy part was testing the launcher before the challenge because we had a few laughs, laughing at how far ours went. If I was to change something I would change the design and idea of our catapult to send the ball further.

NZ Entrepreneur

For the past 7 days I have been working on an activity to research about a New Zealand Entrepreneur. The person that I chose is a well known fashion designer in many countries including NZ and that is Karen Walker. Karen has been designing clothes since the late 80’s but only made herself known internationally in the early 2000’s. Karen Walker has made her name known within the celebrity community and she also designs clothes for big celebrities including: Lady Gaga, Michael Obama, Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez. Not only did we research about our NZ Entrepreneur, but we also made posters and had to answer these following questions:How did your entrepreneur get the idea? What obstacles did he/she face in order to get the product on the market? Where did the product name come from? What has made the entrepreneur famous? In what year was the product invented? How much is the company worth?

My reflection

For the past 6 weeks I have been working on my career choice trying to identify which is better in my opinion and so we started off with our  three top careers that we really wanted to do and then we moved on to choosing which would be the best for our capabilities and I of course chose to learn about law to become a lawyer. Then for 1 week we had to prepare and record an interview spiel to state facts about ourselves  and our own capabilities.

Since covid lockdown started I have never felt so free from overloading on school work in forever, I can finally do my school work at my own pace and get it  done quicker.

I think the most challenging thing about doing all of these activities was trying to choose which career suited me best and digging deep to find out more about myself because I have never been asked so many questions about myself and what I can handle. The easiest part about this whole career business is that I can now prepare for what kind of job I want in the future.

Interview Spiel

Kia ora my name is Havahna I am a year 10 student at the college known as Bay Of Islands, I am also 14 year of age which makes me the second youngest sibling out of 7. I have  plenty of hobbies and interests including dance, cooking, arts and crafts, painting and swimming. I may not have a lot of work experience but I have a few at least and those are babysitting, farming and filing papers. I think that a skill that I took away from each of these experiences was how to carry a sheep without hurting yourself or the animals, practical child care techniques, how to sort papers into  the correct files and how to put up a fence. Skills that I specially uphold are knowing how to cook proper meals, knowing how to clean thoroughly, I also know how to fix a few broken things and I am pretty good at looking after myself. Some values that I cherish everyday are doing things without being told, respecting the elders even just by giving them a smile and my family, friends, cousins, parents just everyone. Some of my past achievements may not be the best. I think that they bring out the best of my capabilities like the digital award was awarded to me twice, the attendance award for 97%, a consistent effort award and a responsible award was also awarded to me twice. Some goals that I hope to achieve are to learn new skills, meet new people, experience different jobs and interact with anyone. Some strengths that I know that I have is reading, which is one of my biggest strengths, I always show up. I never not show up because being late is better than never and I always try to get the work done on time. I think some of my biggest weaknesses to work on will have to be my grammar, communication skills, presentation skills and taking up bigger challenges.

Leadership and Government

This whole term has been making me think alot about leaders, government and so much more. My understanding of leadership is someone who strives for success and is inspiring to those they meet. My understanding of democracy is that everyone has a say in what happens, for example if someone makes a new rule that you don't like, you have the right to say NO. What does the government mean to me? Government to me means someone who leads the country to make it safer and it also means that they can make our laws as well. These topics all relate in a way because they have things in common like: Strive for success, leaders and they all inspire people in a way. This topic relates to a topic we learnt earlier in the term and it is leadership in my school, I chose this topic because the leaders in my school always try to make it a safer and better place to learn. Challenges I faced mentally were trying to read words I don’t understand and trying to think straight. The issue I complain about everyday is the roads in Matawaia because the road workers made the road all slushy like mud. I think this topic is very interesting because I'm learning about politics and about the outside world and so why wouldn't I learn about it.

Does the colour of food effect whether we can identify the flavour?

For the past week or 2 we have been researching for a science fair topic to work on The topic that I have chosen for the science fair is, DOES THE COLOUR OF FOOD AFFECT WHETHER OR NOT WE CAN IDENTIFY THE FLAVOURS? We havent finished our research but there is a way to test if the coulour of food effects our liking of food, for instance we can make a blueberry muffin and colour it orange or make purple banana muffins or green white chocolate. So there are possible ways to test the liking of a certain coloured foods.

We are going to be planning out our equipment for our baking process which we will be doing next week Monday.

Leadership within my school.

For the past couple of days we have been working on our leadership within my school and there are a lot of leaders within this small school called Bay Of Islands College. The topic that we have been working on is about writing down every leader from the top to the bottom in a family tree type of way.  I have learnt that there are a lot of leaders and that it isn’t just students and teachers, but it turns out students are the lowest part of the leader chain. This topic we have been doing supports my learning because now I know who to respect and it also helps me learn more and more about this school. This topic changes my point of view because if I become prefect I will get  a higher level of respect in way and it will also force me to become a better leader towards my peers and family. This topic overall was quick and easy to do and it didn't take up much research to find who the top person is.

Leadership speech

At the start of term 2, we were given an assignment to do and that was a leadership speech, to present in front of the whole class. I reckon I gave good points to become a leader and how to be a better one. The hard part was actually writing the speech due to so much research to find information on what a leader is, but the easy part was actually presenting my speech because it’s just  talking which is what I do everyday so that was easy. The grade I got was excellent so I obviously did something right to get that grade on my speech.   And now here is one of the quotes from my speech.

Patient and steady with all she must bear

Ready to meet every challenge with care

Easy as manner, yet solid as steal

Strong in his faith, refreshingly real

Isn’t afraid to propose what is bold

Doesn’t conform to the usual mold

Eyes that have foresight, for hindsight won't do

Never backs down when she sees what is true

Tells it all straight, and means it all to

Going forward and knowing he's right

Even when doubted for why she would fight

Over and over he makes his case clear

Reaching to touch the ones who won't hear

Growing in strength she won't be unnerved

Ever assuring he’ll stand by his word

Wanting the world to join her firm stand

Bracing the war, but praying for peace

Using his power so evil will cease

So much a leader and worthy of trust

Here stands a man and a woman who will do what they must.

The Nazi

For the past 2 weeks we have been learning about the Nazi and the Holocaust, we had to write about the events that lead up to Nazi taking over Germany and now we are witting a blog about it and our learning. The positive and thoughtful part for researching about the Nazi was when he said that the different political parties ruined Germany for 14 years and so he would rebuild in 4 years if you vote for him. A helpful thing the Nazi did was when they arrested the leader of the SA and every high up there person because the SA killed 150 people and arrested a hundred more.  Why was Hitler being so great when he started becoming political and then killed so many people in the end.
